Oh man... this old thing.
It's been a while since I've had any use out of this blog. A shame really, but it's an old habit of mine, picking something up, enjoying it, putting time and occasionally effort into it. Then loosing interest and never really going back to it.
But I'm bored, so what the hell.
Interests have changed of the years since I last posted any updates, educations were completed, friends were found and the world went into an economic meltdown which only seems to get worst with every passing week. Leaving thousands, maybe even millions destitute and ensuring that nothing will ever be the same again.
I could say something pithy and oh so witty, but all the good lines have already been taken by people far cleverer and more tuned in to Global economical events and the ever increasing socio-political fall out which surounds them like a cloud of flies on a corpse. So I'll talk about something which interests me instead.
For the past few years I've become something of a Role Play fan. Role Play being dungeons and dragons as opposed to sexy nurses/teachers/police officers in the bedroom. This is an important distinction to make early on or otherwise you're all going to start thinking that my sex life is very odd indeed.
Recently I've been spending much of my time exploring the many and varied Splats put out by White Wolf. Primarily in it's New World of Darkness lines, (henceforth referred to as NWoD) these range from the typical big three of Vampire, Wearwolf, and Mage. To the smaller games of Hunter (Supernatural the RPG), Changeling (People who escaped from imprisonment by fairies), Promithian (Frankinstines monster gives you cancer), Geist (I don't even know how to explain this one), and a new upcoming edition to the world.
Mummy.
Mummy: the Curse to give it it's full title, involves, shockingly, Mummys. As they attempt to fulfil the needs and whims of their dark gods, remember who they were, keep their Cult happy, and generally fuck up anyone who gets in their way. Of which they are really good at.
White Wolf have changed up the game plan with Mummy. As opposed to the previous lines wherein the players would be persistently active within the game world, Mummys (Mummies?) only wake up when certain conditions are met. Spending the rest of the time sleeping in their tombs and being tended to by their cults. Said conditions range from Peeps breaking in and nicking stuff, the Cult waking you up or the stars being right. This conditions are pretty convenient plot hooks for your players to sink their teeth into right off the bat, and the system actually rewards payers who work towards the goal as opposed to just fucking about and not getting anything done.
It does this via a reversal of the usual progression of power most NWoD players go through. Every supernatural has a stat related to measuring the innate power which makes them what they are. In the vampires case this is 'Blood potency' or with the Werewolf it is referred to as 'Primal Urge'. These Powerstats universally begin at 1/10 giving the player plenty of time to become familiar with the mechanics of their character before taking them (in some cases) to godhood.
Mummy: the Curse starts it's characters with a Powerstat of 10/10. Making a freshly arisen character one of the most potent supernatural creatures on the planet. But here's the catch, their Powerstat, called Sekhem (roughly translated to 'life energy' I think) slowly drops as time goes on. Giving Mummies limited tenure to do what they gotta do. Fucking about will make it lower faster, cutting time between each separate Decent role. Where as working towards your goal and pleasing the Gods will grant you a reset to the counter before the next Decent role comes along. The degeneration will inevitably happen there's no two ways about it, but doing what you're supposed to be will let you stay at the top tiers that much longer.
In another reversal the Morality stat is replaced with Memory and starts you off at the bottom of the gauge as opposed to the top. In this case Memory represents how much of their existance the Mummy can remember. The lower it is the less they can remember, but the easier it is to tear a guy limb from limb and not feel all guilty over it.
Both of these changes gives the game an interesting new flavour, and has the added bonus of focusing the players on what's important to the campain. They can go off and do their own thing by all means, but don't go crying to the GM when your Sekhem starts dropping like a stone. Sekhem is also be spent for a number of other things, such as repairing Aggravated damage on the fly, or restoring all used Willpower dots. It's useful but risky tactic that can bring a Mummy closer to their end, but be the very thing they need to complete their objective.
I haven't mentioned Utterances and Affinities, well these are the powers granted to the Mummies. Affinities are small traits which can give the Arisen some cool little powers. Like seeing ghosts, being amazing at parkour, or punching through a bank vault door. The Affinities also have a quality which I'll talk about later but for right now I'm focusing on the positive.
Utterances are the bigger magical powers. Crazy shit like breathing fire, summoning swarms of Scarabs, or... I don't know... BEING THE STAR WHICH LEAD THE THREE WISE MEN TO BETHLEHEM AND THE ANGEL WHO APPEARED TO THE SHEPHERDS.
THAT IS A THING.
THAT YOU CAN DO.
I fucking love it!
Some of the Utterances are bible inspired (Like the one which let's you part bodies of water), where as others are inspired by film and TV (making sand storms eat people). There's a lot of variety and pretty much all of them do some really cool things.
The actual progression of the powers is pretty unique as well and ties into my next point. When you get an Utterance you have three 'tiers'. Each one does something different all of them have their uses. Unlike the normal powers in NWoD, you only need to buy an Utterance once. As long as you meet the requirements for the next tier you can cast it. Meaning that clever players will plot out their purchases ahead of time to take maximum advantages of their pillars.
Oh yeah, Pillars.
The Mummies have a thing called a "Five part soul" each part represented by one of the five Pillars. Ab (Heart), Ba (Spirit) Ka (Essence) Ren (Name) Sheut (Shadow). Mummies can have up to five levels in each pillar. These Pillar points are used to fuel their abilities, from stat boosts, to improved healing, powering Utterances, and activating Relics. Unlike other Supernaturals a Mummies max pool is twenty five Pillar Points, so five dots in each pillar. However the relatively low cost of the Mummies abilities makes that a very minor problem. The level of the individual Pillars is used to work out which Tiers have been unlocked on the Utterences. So expect a Mummy with a lot of Pillars to be able to throw around a lot of moves.
The thing is, that while you might start out with access to the cool awesome powers and shit tone of Pillar points. The slow inevitable decline of your Sekhem stat will eventually hit a point where it will start to lower your statistical maximums. Your attributes, skills, Pillars, and by extension your Utterances and affinities will ether be capped or disappear completely, loosing you access to your cool shit as your overall power weakens.
But the powers aren't lost, you simply don't have enough energy to fuel them. And thankfully there are ways to get it back. The primary being, break the things the gods what you to get in the first place. The world is littered with Artefacts, objects containing Sekrem granting them strange abilities. It is these Artefacts that the Mummy is occasionally woken up to find. For the most part grabbing it and stuffing it inside your tomb works for your fickle gods. However, if you fancy some more time running about the mortal world, or theres that one guy you really want to kill before you go and have your nap, you can drink Sekhem from the Artefacts and re-energize yourself.
This comes with it's own dangers, creating horrific monsters, weakening or destroying the artefact, and pissing of your god. Which is a very bad idea. Do it enough and he might just wake up some other mummies to come and stomp your face in. They're kinda dicks like that.
Speaking of getting your face stomped in I've yet to talk endlessly about the unique enemies that Mummy brings to the table. But I suppose that that and the background details can wait for another time. This is pretty long as it it.
So stay tuned for part two, where in I talk about the bad guys, the setting, and maybe even how to integrate Mummies into other NWoD games.

Review. The internet's sense of humor
Being the kind of guy who spends much of my free time doddering around on the internet and hanging around with people who actively uses such humor in their day to day dealings. I'm in a better position then most to discuss such things. Depending on where you are at any point on the world wide web you might be starring at a few different types of humor. Blogs and the like make use of witty lines and ironic humor and although this might be the type most people are familiar with it is by no means the kind which the internet at large has been come to be known by.
By and by the internet has by its own hand become infested with the endless repetition of forced jokes, commonly called memes. These jokes are ether a line or a picture which is posted ad nausiume throughout the endless list of forums and message boards. Normally these memes are taken from a real even or quote from a popular medium like a TV show. Occasionally it will be taken from one of the posts on these message boards. The most common offender being 4Chan's "/b/" board.
the /b/ board is commonly described as the cesspool of the internet. Originally used as the 'random' board on 4Chan, it has devolved into a hell hole of offensive escapism and trolling. Due to its level of anominimaty posters are able to post any view or opinion. Most of the jokes are based around the degradation of women and black people. /B/ is also the home of the "internet hate machine" Anonymous, who's campaign against Scientology caught the media's attention in 2008. Yet despite the media's over reaction. The protests where rather light hearted. Showing the softer side of the meme. However that dousn't mean to say that the internet's idea of fun is always soft. For example, trolling.
Trolling is another popular past time of the internet humor, one user somewhere will make a post with the express purpose of making someone extremely angry. They then sit back and "lerk". At some point someone will reply. The fun then starts as the troll starts an ever escalating argument.
Fun it seems is sparse on the internet, it seems.
Probably be the reason I wrote this then...
Swings and roundabouts I guess.

Customization. An idiot's thoughts.
I'm getting rather sick at starring at the generic blackness which has been my blog for a while now. Its not exiting or different. It simply shows a lack of attention or caring and I want that to change. To make my mark on my own blogging site, to show the essence of what it is that I do.
In short I need to edit my blog window display, and bring it more in line with what this blog is supposed to be about, or at least the theme of what its supposed to be about. Or at least what I want the the theme of what its supposed to be about to be...
the name of this blog is "the Wickerytown Evening Post" obviously its got something to do with a place called Wickerytown and that its some kind of paper. But what is Wickerytown? Well I'm glad you asked me pretending to be you!
Wickerytown is a fictional location, a pocket dimension which is linked to normal earth by 'doors' these doors could be anywhere. Unseeable links to a self contained city who's inhabitants once belonged to norm' earth but walked through a door. Once you walk through you may never leave. Wickerytown is alive and its blood is those who venture over the border willingly or unwillingly as they may be. People of all nationalities call Wickerytown their home. It can be bewildering to enter, and many feel trapped and betrayed. Never being able to see their loved one's again. However, all quickly come to realize that it is a haven and paradise where all may make a new life for themselves. Food appears in shops without explanation or work needed, everyone has a house ready and waiting for them when they arrive. Things that could only be found in the outside world is found in once empty stockrooms be it medical equipment, video games, or this years curriculum.
Wickerytown provides.
So the people have built their society in this place. Operating it just like the outside world. Living in stability, relative comfort and safety.
However, humanity is not the only thing to call Wickerytown it's home...
The Weirdness. A formless hive mind entity which manifests itself through its servants. Seeks to free itself from this dimensional prison by sending out it's forces to corrupt enough of the doors to let it pass through, it does this by constructing 'Hives' around a door and using the extremely potent energy created as a by product of its existence to warp the door to it's will. Normally the residents of Wickerytown are unaware of its existence. However, a group of what are assumed to be delinquents, called "Black Coats" due to their fashion choice. Fight a secret war against the Weirdness. A war that they are loosing.
This is where Ordo3 step in. A group separate from the Weirdness hunting Black Coats. But fighting their own secret war. With powers gained from exposure to the Weirdness' unique energy and equipped with technology powered by the same energy. They attempt to live a normal existence while fighting off all manner of strange happenings.
This. Is THE BIZARE OCCURRENCE OF WICKERYTOWN.
To put it simply Wickerytown is the location the myself and my brothers came up with for our own projects, a universe of odd events and odder characters. I want this blog to reflect that universe!
Ether that or just leave it as it is...

How do I shot review?
So the most hectic period in our capitalist calendar has come and gone only to be replaced by the worst blizzard this country has suffered for 30 years...
I can't decide which was more fun!
Aside from the obvious benefits like giving all school kids an extra week of relaxation to let their brains and learning skills bio degrade It gave me time to think. What about? Well how much I really want to do my own video reviews. To be posted on the internet and have people re-mix it and troll me. But the big issue I'm having is that this is me we're talking about.
Its a little known fact about me, I hate doing something which is the same as an already existing idea. I love my work to be unique as it possibly can be. Whether its a character, world, story, or reviews. I always want my own unique angle to call "my, Preshesss" with the best Gollum impression I can muster at the time.
This is where I'm drawing a blank. I love video games but there are so many people far more knowledgeable about that then me already posting reviews. Its the same for films, comic books, normal books, TV shows. Hell there are even reviewers who focus entirely on one show through its many series for their material like SFdebries, who reviews nothing but Star Trek episodes and does a damn fine job of them!
Sure you could say I could still review video games but find a unique format to do it in. But then surly I'll simply get buried under the mass of other unknown wannabe game reviewers waiting to be discovered. No I want to be able to look at a book and give as good a review as if I looked at play or a advert on the telly. I want to be able to review anything I can and still put out quality work.
Invariably with the internet, I worry that a lot of people will find me unfunny or irritating and simply spam my video's with hate comments. Kinda like with Film Brain, only I know for a fact that I can do better then him. But at the same time I worry I'll never have the individuality I crave from my work and never achieve the overly harsh bars I set for myself.
So what do you think guys? Any suggestions? Or will this post, just like any other I've put out so far be dropped into the void of indifference that blogger is?

So... Christmas.
Yes it has come to pass once more. Same time as last year and yet we still have the whole song and dance over the wether and the panicked buying of presents and the like. It all honesty I'm starting to wonder if Britain is ever prepared for any kind of whether. EVER.
Lets be honest, come heat wave or snow our transport system breaks down more surly then any terrorist plot ever made it. A disappointing finality which hovers over everyones plans every year.
The solution to which is to not go anywhere and enjoy the simple plesure of a warm house and a welcoming family!
Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

So, New Moon
Wow haven't I just been ignoring this! I should really change Blogger to my home page, at least that way I could remember to do something with it.
So yes, something to talk about... How about... the "Twilight saga"?
Twilight and I have a rather interesting relationship. It stays the fuck away from me and I don't bludgeon it's badly written sparkly not-vampire filled pages to death with a spanner, but even with this standing agreement its impossible to escape from its presence in the world. Forums and posters, films and books, pictures and words fill the world we live in. Even the bloody pop ups are shoving it in our face! Now I might be a bit behind the band wagon with this one, but thats simply due to the fact that up until now I couldn't for the life of me decipher what it was that I disliked so much about this thrice accursed collection of glorified fan fiction.
But now it sits starring me in the face like some kind goolish imp which has decided the best way to get my attention is to sit on my chest and poke me in the eyes until I pay it some attention. The fact is lades and gentlemen, that I despise twilight for the simple fact that so much of the fans love has been placed on a man that were he a real guy would have been locked away with a cease and desist order!
Edward Cullins is far from the "Perfect man" that the fan girls clam him to be, I've seen many cases where a girl will dump her boyfriend, stating "he wasn't like Edward Cullins". This makes me wonder what it is exactly that these girls want out of a man. Could it be that they want a vampire? No thats stupid, vampires were an old legend born from peoples ignorance of the world and a whole lot of fear! They were undead monsters who were twisted by what they had become and rose from their GRAVES each night to kill. It wasn't until Stokers "Dracula" that Vampires even had a personality!
So if its not vampires that they are after then what is it then? The sparkle factor? Well I know the old adage "diamonds are a girls best friend" but that just taking it to an unnecessary extreme. Simply stating that they are only doing it because he sparkles is pretty much like saying that girl are only interested in one thing. Cash, which is unfair and slightly sexist. But considering how this book was writen by a woman that might not be a relevant point
No apparently what makes a perfect man is some creepy stalker who puts you in danger and then proceeds to have a text book abusive relationship with you. Really the perfect man girls, well done, well done indeed! Truly you all have such good taste in men.
This point of view is strangely supported by the latest of the "Twilight saga" films "New Moon". In which after getting a paper cut everyone's least favorite sparkly notvampire freaks out and dumps his Mary Sue main character love interest, who spends the rest of the film being a selfish seductive suicidal bitch. While her perfect man tries to kill himself.
No really, thats the entire film in a nut shell.
Sometimes I just wonder if teenage girls strive to become fans of some of the most mundane shit out on the market, or wether its somehow ingrained that if something is like Romeo and Juliet then it must be good (which wasn't written as a love story by the way but rather a study of the self destructive nature of human rivalry.)
Ultimately Twilight will become like Harry Potter, ignored by everyone but the hardcore fans and hated and disliked on the internet... oh wait. It already is.

One half term, no real progress
Okay I'm back from Euro Gamer Leeds and All I can on it is. Wow what a spectacle. I say that is all I can say on it but in fact its all I want to say right now. I've managed to pull a muscle in my back and as I sit here typing away its attempting to stop me breathing. So thats "FUN!" (please note, measurements of fun might differ from reader to reader)
Halloween came and went like a mysteries internet video. Everyone was talking about it, but when you finally get to see it your internet closes down and theirs a power cut. Or to put it in a less confusing way, Nothing happened for me at Halloween. Nothing!
No trick or treaters, no visitors, no frights, no scares! Not even the annual attempt by the daemons/elder gods who live under my house took place. Which was rather disappointing. We didn't even watch a scary film, we watched Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!
So without the usual distractions of creatures with more eyes then they have teeth Halloween passed with a whisper and we where none the wiser.
But enough about my hell dwelling squatters and their attempts to kill all life as we know it! On to more important matters, like University work...
I have been somewhat distracted this half term and I will be the first to admit that it isn't really good enough. Especially when we have so little time left and so much work to do. A distinct lack of speech work or research (a result of a points failure in Leeds trapping me for a few days longer then I would have liked) and only a few moments more on the animation. (although they are some very good few seconds if I do say so myself)
I have yet to start the 750 words, and didn't even consider the mood boards.
This leaves me with one or two days to do a number of tasks.
To put it likely I'm rather screwed.
But, meh, shit happens. It my back has not healed by tomorrow then it is possible the I might not be able to make it in. I hope I will be able but as it is I'm struggling to lie down without pain and spasms racking my body.
So all in all what have we learned today children? That I'm injured, I've done fuck all work, and Halloween barely registered as a blip on the scale of "stuff that has happened"
